Sone Ki Chidiya (1958)

Lakshmi is a poor girl with a large family to support. She strikes it big time when she gets a chance to star in a film. She falls in love with her flamboyant co-star, Amar. Disillusionment faces her when she learns that he, too is only interested in her wealth. She runs away and tries to commit suicide when she is stopped by a poor writer, Shrikant, who befriends her. It is then that she realizes that not everyone in the world is interested in her purely for her money.

Sujata gets adopted by the Chowdhury family, which consists of dad Upendranath; mom Charu; and a daughter, Rama, and is treated just like a daughter. Sujata grows up in this caring and nuturing household and leads a very comfortable life. Both Sujata and Rama are now of marriageable age. A young man, Adhir, comes to the Chowdhury household with a view to marry. He meets Sujata and falls in love with her. When he informs his aunt of this decision, she is aghast, as she knows that Sujata is not only of a lower caste but also an untouchable, and she wants Adhir to marry Rama, or will not permit him to live with her. While at the Chowdhury household, Charu wants Sujata to leave the house immediately, as she will have nothing to do with her anymore. Will Adhir and Sujata be ever married or will they be two more victims to the caste system?

Raj is an orphan who comes to Bombay with the dream of making it big. His cheerful spirits and ideals are crushed by the harsh realities of a big city. He encounters Vidya, a poor school teacher who has very high principles. After a spell of unemployment, he lands a job in a laundry. When he delivers a dress to a rich client (Maya), his life takes an unusual turn. The client dresses him up and parades him in front of several rich and influential people as a "Prince". His sleight-of-hand tricks win her a big sum of money, but she mocks him and casts him out. However, Seth Sonachand Dharmanand spots the fake Prince and offers him a partnership in his under-hand dealings. With money at his command, Raj finds himself increasingly alienated from the people he loves (Vidya, Ganga Mai) and unhappy with himself. Matters come to a head when a housing scam threatens to defraud thousands of common men and women of their life's savings.
